Biography

Michael Burge OAM has been advocating for mental health consumers and carers for approx. 25 years. He has represented consumers and carers on numerous local, state, national and international forums and written many articles including an article for the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH); titled “Stigma and Discrimination: A Lived Experience Perspective” 2018.

In the WFMH article, Michael believes discrimination against people with a lived experience of mental health in workplaces could potentially be the biggest modern-day systemic failure with regards to consumer rights. The rights of people with a lived experience of mental health are being deliberately denied and not adequately acknowledged in their communities and workplaces in Australia and around the world.

Michael Burge OAM is a member of the International Initiative for Mental Health Leadership (IIMHL); participated in exchanges to America, Canada, England, Ireland, Scotland, New Zealand. Participated in and presented at the World Congress of the World Federation for Mental Health & Conferences; New Delhi India 2017, Houston Texas 2018, Buenos Aires 2019.

Michael Burge OAM was awarded Medal of the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in June 2014 for his outstanding achievements as a Community Mental Health Peer Advocate since 1995.
